I know how you feel. You’ve always struggled to gain weight. You’ve always been skinny but hold fat around your stomach. No matter how much you work out, I just can’t seem to grow. Same with me, but then one day I had the most grueling, balls-to-the wall leg day I’ve ever had and everything changed.

I was starving! I scarfed down an entire medium Brooklyn-style pepperoni pizza from Dominos in one sitting. From that day on, for the next three months, it became my leg day ritual. I went from weighing 138lbs right up to 150lbs! Now I’m not trying to say that pizza is the healthiest option in the world, hell no! But if you’re an ectomorph and in your early 20s, it is the cheapest, high calorie, high protein meal option you can find.

You see, the challenge that all of us ectomorphs face is that our metabolisms work in overdrive. You think you’re eating enough and everyone’s impressed by your appetite, but you look exactly the same. You’re able to lose weight without doing anything. It’s a blessing and a curse at the same time. What you need to do to gain weight is consume more calories than what you’re burning. Let’s dig a little deeper:

Let’s say your BMR (the number of calories you burn doing absolutely nothing within a day, literally just existing) is 1600 calories. You’re a pretty active dude, training 4-5 days a week, then you’ll be burning more than 1600 calories, you’d be burning upwards to 2700 calories in your typical day – this is your maintenance number. To gain weight, your mission is to eat more than 2700 calories within your day. A good goal is to eat 500 more calories than your maintenance number. Your magic number is 3200. 3200 calories.

Now how the hell are you supposed to eat that many calories?! I mean, the average calorie intake for men in America is only 2600 calories. Here’s your answer:
A medium Brooklyn-style pepperoni pizza from Dominos has a total of 1620 calories. It also has a whopping 78 grams of protein! That’s 2x more protein than what you’d find in your favourite protein shake.

Like I said, pizza isn’t the healthiest option in the world. But if you’re an ectomorph in your early 20s, it is the cheapest, high calorie, high protein meal option you can find.
